The President of Fighting Lithuania: Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas
Lithuanian history is rich with remarkable heroes who inspire us. Among them, one of the most prominent figures of the 20th century is undoubtedly Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas, the leader of the Lithuanian partisans. This year, we commemorate the 115th anniversary of his birth and the 70th anniversary of his death.
To honor J. Žemaitis-Vytautas, the Lithuanian Special Archives has prepared both a stationary and virtual exhibition. These exhibitions present, for the first time, a richly illustrated portrayal of our hero's childhood, youth, military studies, service in the Lithuanian army, partisan activities, and other life events. The exhibition features most of the known photographs of J. Žemaitis-Vytautas. The displayed items are preserved in various Lithuanian state archives, museums, libraries, as well as in the personal collections of J. Žemaitis's family and others.
The stationary exhibition is displayed on the facade of the former KGB building in Vilnius (Gedimino Ave. 40), while the virtual exhibition is available on the Lithuanian Archives Virtual Exhibitions website.
The exhibition texts are presented in both Lithuanian and English.
This exhibition was created as part of a project funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
