The Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania is starting to implement the project "Creation of Electronic Services EAIS 'Digital Reading Room'"

The goal of the project is to create three electronic services within the Electronic Archive Information System (EAIS) infrastructure: "Digital Reading Room," "Genealogy," and "Personal Names Archive." These services aim to ensure unified access to digital resources accumulated in state archives, increase the accessibility of documents stored in state archives, and develop relations with interested user groups.

The duration of the project is 36 months.

The value of the project is €2,916,307.99.

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

On September 25, 2018, the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania issued Order No. 3-479, allocating funding for projects No. 02.3.1-CPVA-V-526-01-0006 "Creation of Electronic Services EAIS 'Digital Reading Room'" and No. 02.3.1-CPVA-V-526-01-0007 "Modernization and Development of the Information System E-Cinema" for the project No. 02.3.1-CPVA-V-526-01-0006 "Creation of Electronic Services EAIS 'Digital Reading Room'" executed by the Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania. A total of €2,916,307.99 in funding was allocated from the European Union Funds Investment Action Programme's Priority 2 "Promotion of Information Society" under measure 02.3.1-CPVA-V-526 "Digitization and Dissemination of Cultural Content".

On October 10, 2018, the Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania and the Central Project Management Agency signed a contract for the execution of the aforementioned project.

The project's goal is to create three electronic services within the infrastructure of the Electronic Archive Information System (EAIS): "Digital Reading Room," "Genealogy," and "Personal Names Archive." These services aim to ensure unified access to digital resources accumulated in state archives, increase the accessibility of documents stored in state archives, and develop relations with interested user groups.

To achieve this goal and create added value for society, the Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania plans to modernize the Electronic Archive Information System (EAIS) during the project by creating a new EAIS virtual reading room subsystem. This subsystem will include a virtual information search system, allowing for the search of information in digitized documents of the National Document Fund stored in the Lithuanian State Archives. The project expects to enrich the National Document Fund with metric documents stored in Catholic church parishes, which are planned to be digitized and described during the project. Additionally, it is believed that publishing digital content online will improve access to documents accumulated in state archives and meet the information needs of users, especially those who cannot access documents during the working hours of state archives (such as workers, youth, emigrants, and others).

Target groups include individuals interested in family history, researchers from various fields (e.g., historians, linguists), museum professionals, local historians, high school students, university students, and others.
